Motion design in Lyon: explaining what a camera cannot film

Motion design shows what does not exist in front of the lens: a process, a figure, an idea, an object that has not been built yet. At Collective Efficiency it is made by Raphaël Erba, art director. It completes a film, or stands on its own.

What is motion design for?

Three things, and it is worth knowing which one you want.

Dressing. Animated logo, titles, transitions, end credits. It is what makes a film look like your brand rather than like any film.

Explaining. An animated diagram gets across in twenty seconds a mechanism that takes two minutes to say out loud. It is the most cost-effective use: an industrial process, a customer journey, a legal structure.

Existing without a shoot. A fully animated video when there is nothing to film, or when filming would cost ten times more.

How much does motion design cost?

On quotation, because two animations of the same length can call for very different amounts of work.

What sets the price: the length, the number of elements to draw, whether there are characters, the writing and the voice-over, and how many versions need producing.

What is already covered elsewhere: as part of a €6,500 full setup, motion design is already in the price.

The quote arrives within 48 hours of the conversation, with a breakdown of what it contains.

What is the difference between motion design and animation?

In practice, motion design animates shapes, text and diagrams; animation tells a story with characters. The first explains, the second embodies.

The two often mix, and the line only matters for the quote: an animated character takes far more time than a diagram, even at the same length.

Do you need a film to do motion design?

No. A fully animated video works on its own, and it is sometimes the right choice: when the subject is abstract, when the production site is off limits, when the product only exists as 3D drawings.

The reverse is true too: a filmed piece almost always gains from graphics. It is the item that costs the least and changes the perception of the result the most.
